the sky is REALLY bright and very white. i think this photo could work better if taken early morning or close to sunset. maybe more field in front of him would give it a "lost in the moment" look/stare?

A couple of things pop out for mebeyond the severe backlighting.

first off, when shooting portraits do a pocket check...... no cell phones, pagers, combs, or wallets to leave ugly lumps. It almost looks like his left femur is broken.

Secondly, a tip I was told early on in life, when shooting from the side like this either turn the head away so you get a true profile, or turn the head nearer so you can see the outside edge of the far eye. It is more pleasing and does not leave a hole looking spot where the eye is or leave an eyeball hanging out in space.

One last thing that stands out to me are those jeans, they are so saturated blue that the coloring does not fit with the rest of the image. The pants look almost pasted into the image.
