Dunno about cicadas around your back yard, but the insects we have are known for several things- the noise they make during the warmer / summer months, and the food value they become for some of our birds who love a bit of juicy insect. It is quite common for us while camping in the bush to find a still alive cicada minus its abdomen fall to the ground alongside our campsite .. and the ants finish the disposal job over the next few hours. Here's one clinging to a bit of rough tree bark.

Last year we had a historic overlap of two brood hatches, they were everywhere. I never got up the nerve to, but there were people coming up with recipes for them.
