When using the 50D and the pop-up flash...try taking a piece of plain, white typing paper and cutting a 1-in ch wide "tab" in the top, center and bottom, center areas, and then use cellophane tape to fasten the tabs to the pentaprism area, thus creating an 8.5 inch wide "diffusing tube" might source...

This type of improvised diffuser works pretty well at softening a pop-up flash's output for close-up shots, and the total cost is like 3/10 cent per diffuser when the cheapest typing paper is bought by the ream at Office Depot.

I've found a bit of Bounty paper towel (not Brawny), white napkin, or kleenex (preferably unused), folded or not, soften a pop-up flash fairly well, also. Just hold it up to the flash and... voila!
