Beginner bird photos

jhermes · Jan 12, 2011

I shot these photos recently at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh PA. I found it a very good location for shooting birds because they were all very close up.

Info:
Nikon d70
55-200mm VR
Edited in Lightroom 3

Some nice birds; you may want to consider reading up on spot-metering and exposure compensation and bracketing. This can help you improve your exposures so that you can capture greater detail in images such as the last one.

not a fan of #2 due to the out of focus foreground items

If that is Beginner than I feel like I am in over my head when I try. But I think you have better equipment.

Very nice work, I love what you have done with these.

If you ever get a head shot of a hawk or eagle that is straight on they are perfect for editing in Photoshop to be half the face of human. I have done it before with very successful and dramatic effects.

Did you take these in a bird sanctuary? Or were you lucky enough to capture these on your own?

Okay, thank you for the advice. Any recommendations on where to read up on those topics? I'll do some research.

I actually really like the second one, adds an extra dimension to the photo with the grass/plant in the foreground.

Would watch your exposure on some of the eagle shots - little more light needed to get the feather detail - have a play in photoshop to see if you can bring the feather up - the texture would really enhance the photo.
