I really like the 2nd better.
Something about the hair and light on the first one that keeps throwing me off.

If you're going to use sunlight as a main light, you should make sure the subject is not back lit. The face on the first is just a little dark, but having the sun com from up and behind/camera right, you get shadows in his eye sockets.

thanks for this information! is the fact that he's backlit the reason why people like the 2nd one better? im pretty sure he's backlit in the second one too, but there's a cloud over the sun. i just want to make sure i understand this correctly.
