Best DX Telephoto?

Uh, no such thing exists...there are no DX telephotos...and no I dislike the new avatar and miss that cool hand-drawn tevo avatar; the old avatar made you look like a cool individual, whereas the new one makes you look like an over-eager Nikon fanboy.

I'm not sure what Derrel is talking about, but you really only have a few options for Nikon DX telephoto lenses, The 55-200mm DX, 55-200mm DX VR, 55-300mm DX VR and the 18-200mm VR/VR II. Even the 18-70mm DX and 16-85mm DX VR lenses are getting into the beginning of the telephoto range. Just remember, you can always use a lens designed for FF on a DX body as well. If you look in that direction, there are many to choose from. Do you know what range you are looking at? It's kind of hard to answer without more info.

I know the the cheaper 70-300mm and newer 70-300mm VR are both FF. I am not aware of any other DX version of that lens.

Tevo.. don't buy DX lenses. If you buy FX lenses, and use them on a DX body.. you get nothing but the sweet spot in the middle of the lens... basically eliminates corner softness of any kind. The only DX lens I own is the 10-24 DX G... And I will probably sell that when I get the D800 (if it ever comes out). If you are wanting a good tele.. get the 70-300 VR like the one MJHoward just sold... GOOD lens for the money! If you need help finding one, let me know....

Plus.. if you ever upgrade to a FF sensor, you already have the lenses.....

Good to see the OLD tevo avatar back!! My point was "best" and "DX telephoto" do not go together. Kind of a tongue in cheek comment. As cgipson wrote, "Tevo.. don't buy DX lenses."

There are some DX zoom lenses, but I do not consider them to be 'telephotos', but rather zooms. There is ONE DX telephoto lens that I am aware of, the 85mm f/3.5 DX Micro-Nikkor, which is a new lens...the majority of Nikkor telephoto lenses, 60,85,105,135,180,200,300,400,500,600, are not DX lenses. DX really does not bring with it any size or weight reductions in the telephoto arena, so virtually all of Nikon's "best telephoto" lenses are full-frame capable.

Very true - I've shot the lens, its not stunning, but its still pretty good. (Nothing compared to the 70-200 f/2.8)
