Best focus / Meter mode for newborn WITH 3 yr old brother?

I have the privilege in photographing my 2nd newborn this weekend. Mom has requested that we "attempt" to get a few shots with big brother.

Spot metering AF-S focus seemed to work well with my first newborn I photographed a few weeks ago. I was somewhat pleased with the DOF that had achieved with my 50mm prime lens on f3.2 but I'm thinking that I will need to bump the f stop quite a bit for 2 subjects.

Would it be possible to achieve good focus with the same metering and focus settings by just changing the aperture?

Yes. AF-S is appropriate for subjects that are not moving much.

Your users manual likely suggests using centre-weighted metering for portraiture, because Spot metering looks at such a small % of the scene.
However, experienced photographers may still use Spot mode, but meter several spots in a scene before deciding on which exposure triad settings to use.

Are you still using the Nikon P90 listed on your profile page?

I guess it would help if I had updated my profile! I recently upgraded to a Nikon D7000 and splurged on a Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1.8.

For example, let's say that I am shooting baby and brother side by side ( laying down or brothers check against baby ) , would I get better focus by focusing on the eye closest to the next subjects eye?
