Best Lens for Rebel XTi

Look at the price difference between the body only and with the kit lens. Can you get a decent lens for that little, $100 to 110 usually, that is useful and pretty good? In other words, take the lens, it's a deal.

It's called the 50mm 1.8. It's WAY better, and cheaper.

I currently have the choice to buy either 28-135mm f 3.5-5.6 IS USM OR 17-85MM F4-5.6 IS USM LENS



Is it worth it to buy two lenses? I have a 600-800 dollar budget for lens. I'm leaning towards the 28-135mm OR the 50mm 1.4. Hmmmm.

Which lens (or two) should I purchase?? The 28-135mm and the 50mm 1.8 for portraits? Or just the Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 ??


Sorry for so many questions, just trying to figure this stuff out and I have to make a decision tomorrow, eek!

The answer is easy....

If you need the wide-angle, which can be useful on a 1.6 cropped body, then get the 17-85mm lens. If you need the reach in the telephoto, get the 28-135mm. Both lenses are good.

There is no such thing as the best choice.... only based on what you need.

Either case, choose one of those two zooms and put in another few bucks for the 50mm f1.8 (you don't necessarily need the f1.4 version). The 50mm f1.8 will be extremely useful in terms of learning and low-light.

The 28-135 wa developed before the digital sensors became prevalent - it covers a really useful optical range. Now that a lot of the digital cameras still have cropped sensors, the 17-85mm is (after crop multiplication factor) roughly a 28-135.

Go with the 17-85.
