Shot these two the other day, my buddy requested a new facebook photo, so i was happy to shoot it for him.
Both shots use one sunpak 120j at full power into an umbrella, and two vivitar 285hv's at full power into one umbrella.

It's interesting that you choose to shoot using umbrellas - I've always found it better in these type of shooting situations to use a bare or gridded speedlight to give a harder and more focused beam of light to illuminate the rider but not the background. That said, your lighting does look good...

When I look at these, I see more light on the sides and backs of your models, as opposed to the fronts.

You might improve your session if you position the lights more toward the fronts of your models and get closer to them for a tighter frame.

I agree about the back lights being a bit overpowering, i'd probalby crop a bit closer myself esp for something that is going to be like a profile picture, other then that I like them. Good to see people out still riding bikes.

I normally shoot bare bulb when i'm out side. but being inside I like the effect and the Umbrellas eliminate the shadows I would get on the wall otherwise.

Im very uninterested in getting a tighter crop. They make for boring action photos.
These are already fairly stock photos, being at an indoor skatepark, there arent alot of interesting elements there.
I liked the colors in both of these however, (the green shirt, and the blue and red.) but i do agree the backlight is a bit strong in the first photo.

If anything I'd like to re shoot the red rail, fisheye from the other side to eliminate the distracting wall studs in the background

If there aren't a lot of interesting elements indoors? Why not get closer? I keep looking at your photos and wish they were all zoomed in tad more.

Technically well done just the action leave a bit to be desired. Grinds are always tough to make interesting and often rely on the surrounding and obstacle to make an exciting photo.

i know you can only shoot what people are able to do, so you did the best with what you had.

thank you, they are hard to shoot, especially in a skate park environment. I'm hoping to shoot more Street photos this summer when it warms up. There are alot of good set ups in the City.

No interesting elements? Make it interesting with lights. Use two umbrellas to light the front of the rider and some of the surrounding environment.Then use a bare bulb flash, probably with a grid or a snoot and possibly gelled red or blue as a strong backlight. Have the flash power up high to dial back on the ambient exposure, leaving the non-immediate surroundings dark or black. A lot of set up effort I know, but would make for some good shots.
