Black mask

I have Elements 8. I'm trying to mask out the gray curb which is most prominent on the left side of the picture. Ive already added brightness contrast and soft light layers (can't really see the soft light but ok). What kind of mask do I need to apply for the background to be all black? I'm very new at this so dumb it down for me. Thanks

First you need to download and install the free layer mask tool for Elements. Then you need to learn how to use layer masks.
