Day 3 of my 365 day photo challenge. I attempted to convert my two of my photos to black and white. C&C welcome

Your first picture is blown out, the flash was too strong or too close to the face. So the details are lost. You were probably too close to the subject.
The second picture is better, but the focus is soft and the light creates black circles around the eyes.
