I like the second picture. I would maybe increase the contrast a little.

The first one is much more interesting to me.

No offense, but the second one just comes off as a snapshot of a tree to me. The first one seems to have much more going on for it.

...I guess I like the minimalist style of it.

Yes, i can see what you mean. Sometimes simple is better.
I had a question... is 800x600 the largest picture size that can be uploaded on a thread?

You can post them any size you want, but the forum will automatically resize them to whatever size that is up there. Keeping them around 800-1000 pixels on the long side helps to load faster though...
