Blur the background?

Though all the above information is good information
I can see you as a beginner getting confused

I will toss in my 2 cents and make it very simple for you
Here is what I learned when I first got my D-SLR
First thing you will require is a camera that supports interchangable lenses

To obtain the look your after as shown in the pictures below Made easy
Set your Camera to Auto ... Use a lense 80mm or above
focus on the center and snap your shot ..
Your Depth of field will be very close to what I have below...

Once you gain some experience and understand Depth of Field and how
to set your camera's F stop Aperture etc ..
This might get you by
Try it .. In this new Digital world you don't have to worry about wasting film :D

The Camera I used was a Pentax K100D with a Tamrom 70-300 MM lense
These Photos Were NOT Photo-shopped

Hope it helps you a little

To get a "blurred" background, requires a narrow depth of field. To achieve that, set the aperture to the lowest possible number you can. The lower the number, the more narrow the depth of field. If you focus on the subject within that cone shaped field, then everything not in it, will be out of focus, depending on what aperture it is and how far apart they are.

Best way is to set it to manual mode and experiment, if you don't feel like reading up on basics.
