The British Soldier Lichen, like all lichens, is a combination of a fungus and an algae living in symbiosis. The red portion are the fungal spores. I find these colorful lichens occasionally on rotting stumps, usually close to water.

A Canadian member that hasn't posted in quite some time now, first informed me of these nice little " soldiers ". Nice pic.
