Another young victim agreed to pose for me. C&C appreciated.
1. I am not sure how I feel about this. It goes from harsh lines on the left to very soft background right.

2. Natural light, liked the lines.

3. red-gelled flash on church, shoot-through in front of her.

Again, I have had a few days to enjoy these so give me your best shot.

In all three, the background overpowers the subject.

I like the ideas of the shots, but her eyes are a little too lost in 1 and 3. Here's one of my pictures that has the same issue:

Second one is my favorite by far, except I think that if you put her plane along the horizontal axis, it would be a little stronger. Also, the girl is underexposed and the background still overpowers the shot. I love the look of it, but it's not too strong since she is underexposed.

First one has a serious blue cast, which is easily fixable in Lightroom. Here it is edited


I brightened the shadows a little, and changes the white balance +73 to the yellow side.

I like the idea of the third one, but she still looks a little lost, and the bright red church is interesting, but too distracting for a portrait IMO.

Keep at it though, you have a great eye according to these pictures, but I think you need to work a little more on the technical side.

Just out of curiosity, what mode did you shoot these in?

I like your edit. Most of my pictures where coming out very blue that evening. I agree about the fill-light in the first two. It was a very beautiful light so maybe a reflector would have helped.
The second was on a hill and I didn't even think of rotating it. I had trouble with the third because I wanted light to the top of the church. I used the gelled flash on full power. I should have used a weaker gel and increased the light on the young lady. It looked good on the back of the camera at the time.

Well it's your picture, so I'm glad you like it. Like I said, you have a great eye, which is something hat is hard to teach, and clearly good ideas about your pictures.

I like this edit. I get the same feeling as you were going with the first, but I think it's just processed more to my liking. I like the edits Casey did, but it changes to mood.

But with that said, I still prefer her edit of #1.
