Building your own website

For a starting out new photographer that isn't getting paid.. $1000 setup fee is pretty hefty...

Yes it's a little out of my price range at this point in time. But there are many options within my budget. Still trying to figure out which to use though lol.

I'm in the same boat.. I currently use posterous but i'm looking for something that gives me a bit more customization on the templates, has client side proofing and a much better blogging system.

Wordpress is the ticket. Thousands of themes to choose from, and you can edit them to make them look how you want. You can have client proofing on a password protected page with an embedded gallery. Blogging is also integrated, so set up one page as your blog, and have a static front page.

Best of all, wordpress is free!

Great thank you I'll check it out!

Writing HTML, CSS, and Javascript code is.
Even this is debatable today. Everyone is learning HTML, CSS, Jscript, etc these days.

I code all my sites in RubyOnRails. It's a steep learning curve but well-worth the time investment. I find it superior to other web languages yet it plays quite nicely with them.

DO NOT USE A DARK BACKGROUND WITH WHITE FONT! It's hell on the eye's. 90% of the time if I go to a site that uses white text on a dark background, it's closed
Fact.

I recommend trying Wordpress. The learning curve isn't so bad and it's very versatile. The plugins available for WordPress are also superior, in my opinion, to other options available of the same flavor. With the SEO plugin, you can really put your site in front of your intended audience. The analytics plugin also allows you to monitor what content (photos, text, posts) is more favorable to your visitors and you can mimic that content to give your viewers what they're looking for.

Register your domain @ Web hosting provider - Bluehost.com or Domain Names & Web Hosting : 1&1 Internet Inc. Both are cheap and easy.

Wordpress is a CMS = content management system = software/website, which allows you to manage its contents. If you install it on your server, hook that to your domain, why not.
Maybe try looking at some tutorials on how to install it, change settings, templates, plugins.. There are plenty vids on youtube as well, just don't be lazy and do some research on your own too :)

You sure can, and to install wordpress, just go into cpanel in your hosting account, there should be something called fantastico, its really one click to install wordpress on a new domain

I also have to disagree with light letters on a dark background. Also, my site is in my sig so you can see what wordpress looks like.

What is the gallery plugin you are using? I am working on my own wp site and trying to settle on my display and presentation pages. I really dig that flow!

EDIT: I mean the home page gallery, the rest look like NEXgen...

Remember not to build your site in flash because Google and all other major search engines won't be able too index the site. If you need some one to work on search engine optimization to get you listed on the first page of google and yahoo for words that people search for to find your site after your sites done just PM me I know a few people.
