Oil producing Pumpjacks like these dot the country, including southern Indiana. Affectionately called "nodding donkey's" among other euphemisms.

They where developed in the early 1900's for use with slow filling oil deposits. Built to last, they operate for decades. Most often seen resting, they spring to life when the oil reservoir refills.

This pump is on display in Indiana's Harmonie State Park.

There are lots of them working in L.A. Thanks for the info; I always wondered why each one wasn’t working all the time.

When I lived in Oklahoma, these were a very common sight. The state capital grounds even have working wells on them. Thanks for jogging my memory
