Buttonwoods | Make a Wish | Sunflowers

Every year Buttonwoods Farm in CT does a "Sunflowers for Wishes" campaign to benefit the Make a Wish foundation. It's grown since 2003, and is really quite the sight. People come from far and wide to photograph, purchase, see, and enjoy the flowers. It's one of those things that, if your local, you have to see and as a photographer I HAVE to photograph. Well tonight I finally made the trip out, and I'm really glad I did. A fellow photographer who lives close to the flowers told me he's been there every night for the last two weeks, and last night and tonight were the best two sunsets he's seen.

I love this shot! Did you use a GND for the sunset? Perhaps my GND is too dark, but I never seem to get this stunning of results from mine.

Nitpick - On the left side, whatever the white thing is in the foreground out of focus in front of the sunflower is really sticking out to me for some reason. Otherwise, love the shot!

I would if I had time. This was post-sunset, and I saw the sky light up with pink so I quickly reset and started shooting. I actually composited two photos, one for the flowers (maybe 1/4th of a second? I think) and on for the sky (closer to 1/30th). I agree, those damned white flowers are over my sunflowers in the bottom left. I'm going to try and clone it out in PS later.

Yeah, I can't ever seem to find sunsets like that. Every time I look at this photo, I find new elements I like about it. I don't know what this genre of photography is called, but it's the one genre that I would really love to pull off but can't yet. It's different than a traditional landscape, wide angle, deep DOF, showing the vastness of the landscape. It's more of almost a landscape still-life or something, I don't know. Focusing on a small beautiful piece of the view in order to tell a bigger story or convey a bigger feeling. Anyway, I think you absolutely nailed it here.

Wow, that's really high praise! Thank you very much. This type of image really stands out to me too. It's "different" than most of my landscape work.
