Canon 40D - Pretty much set on this.

Canon 50mm 1.8 Lens - Of course..

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens - Decent zoom for now, or is there a better one in this price range?

CF Card - Not sure, looking at either the Sandisk 4gb Extreme II or III

Filters (Protective)- Good quality, cheap-ish filter suggestions?

Anything else I may need? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds really good. You've done your studying.

I suggest a speedlight for latter uses.

If you want to save a couple hundred, get a 30D instead.

I agree.

If you don't need the 40D, save money on the body and buy better glass. Grab the 70-200 F2.8 L or something.

I just got my 40D, but needed better high ISO shooting and faster frame rate. At the time, there wasn't a 30D for sale (used), but I got a wicked deal on a used 40D (less then 500 actuations) so I couldn't pass it up.

might want a lens a bit wider, i found 50mm on a apc sensor not really usable indoors

The sigma is a VERY decent lens for it's price.
For the joker who suggest the 70-200 2.8L, you have to know that the sigma cost less than 200$... so even if he was to take a used rebel xt he wouldn't be able to pay for a canon 70-200 f2.8 :p

The 30D is a decent camera, but it just depent if the price difference is huge between the 30D and the 40D, if not, get the 40D.

Zorac: yes, 50mm is tight on a APS-C, but it's the only lens that cost so little and that can deliver so much.
At 28 or 30mm, the lens of this quality cost far more ;)

Thanks for the input everyone, I finally got it ordered today.

I ordered:
the 40D
Sigma 70-300mm
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sandisk 4GB Extreme III
a monopod to keep the Sigma steady
one of those lens cleaning pens
and a bag to carry all my goodies :lmao:

Now to wait for it to arrive.. :x
