C&C: Film SLR n00b Shots

I'm going to have to invest in some kind of editing suite for the computer. I'm still shooting film, but at least I can upload the CD's and attempt some retouching for my realtime goofs ;)
Thanks-a-million! ;)

(and it is/was a cheap filter, sadly!)

Gimp is free, try it before spending on other software.
Regarding UV filters, a party says they are needed to protect lenses, another party says there is no need for that kind of protection, in particular because they may produce flare/glare. A hood may help in some cases (also as a protection).

3 rockstars who shoot 100% film are:

Jose Villa:http://josevillablog.com/
Jonathan Canalas:Jonathan Canlas Photography
and Sarah Chen: Sarah K Chen Photography Blog »

THESE were amazing! Thanks so much!
(Dear Lord, there is sooo much to learn!!) <3 it all, though! And I'll enjoy attempting!
They are incredible photographers, Jose Villa inspired me to shoot my weddings and engagements on film. His images are just so classy, clean, and organic. None of this latest-lightroom-plug-in digital looking stuff. Actually a couple days ago, on Saturday, I shot my first e-session completely on film :D

And before you go out to buy software, talk to your lab first. Tell them things like, "brighten up the shadows", or "I like things a little warmer", or even show them a photographer and say "match this color and tonality" (granted if you shot things the same way). The photographers I mentioned, could work completely without Photoshop if they wanted to. Jose Villa's pictures are just about straight from Richard Photo Lab! I was listening to a podcast about him today and he said all he does in Photoshop is resize for his blog and take out dust spots. What comes back from the lab is what he delivers. That's pretty remarkable.

Also, fast lenses and better bodies can make a big difference (even when starting out). The N55 is one of the lowest-end SLR Nikon ever made. There really are alot of key features that it's missing.

Nikon F100:Nikon Autofocus F100 SHUTTER CURTAIN WRINKLED 35MM SLR AUTO FOCUS CAMERA BODY - KEH.com
Nikon 50mm f/1.8:Nikon Autofocus 50 F1.8 D (52) WITH CAPS 35MM SLR AUTO FOCUS STANDARD ANGLE LENS - KEH.com

$250, load it up with Portra400 (rated at 200) or Fuji 400H (rated at 100) and you'll be making beautiful pictures with little, to no editing in photoshop.

BTW, the proof is in the pudding. The last 13 or so pictures on my flickr page are all shot on film.

I'm going to suggest getting getting a mechanical Nikon SLR if you plan on getting another film body. I've always prefferred mechanical SLRs, I don't like to rely on electronics to wind my film, set my settings and what not, I don't like to rely on that battery to take a photo. Plus, most electronic SLRs feel a lot cheaper to me than mechanical ones. The only electronic film SLR that's appealed to me was the Nikon F100 suggested by Switch :P

Anyway, How about a Nikon F, or FM? FM2 maybe? Or a metered mechanical SLR like the Nikon FE or FG! Non metered film cameras sound scary at first, but once you get the hang of the Sunny 16 rule and judging exposure with your eyes, it becomes second nature. I prefer it to reading off meters now.

I shoot with a Nikon F sometimes and it's a pleasure to use! There are a few photos on my flickr that have been taken with the F... some of my recent stuff is with film though. here's a link if you'd like to see! Flickr: PatrickYHC's Photostream

Cool photos by the way, I like the 5th one a lot... and the Iphone photo is pretty cool as well. Keep up the good work!

I just wanted to say, keep up the film work... film is in no way inferior to digital!
