C&C - No layers or blending...

I don't know how to use layers and blending on Pixelmator (no Photoshop)... so I generally just open the shadows and add a graduated filter with a higher exposure for the bottom part of the picture. Does it work?

It works, I do it often if there isn't a huge range of light values across a scene. One thing I can suggest is pull your shadows in the graduated filter as well. It isn't needed, or even works, in every scene, but sometimes it helps when you have things (like the tree here) above the horizon. It makes it look less obvious that you pulled down the exposure on the sky
