I don't know where in the image the military is referenced? Anyway I like the sunset where it is. A little bit of fill light would have made this image awesome!

Nah... I didn't try to incorporate any military reference into the actual photo... I mentioned it in the description just because...

I think you're extremely talented behind the camera and at the editing stage. I'd love to see what you would do with this photo.

Thank you Below is my take on going with a high key b/w. I also lightened the sand more. Question - were they actually walking? It looks like the were standing still, but in poses to make it looked like they were walking.

They were actually walking... I had them step off their left foot and snapped... They were almost marching. &#128515;

I like your edit, but I blew out the sky in the original, and I don't think it translates well into high key b/w.

Maybe a more subdued sepia tone? Would you give that a spin?
