I didn't cut it out with that intention, I took the picture thought it looked decent kept and when I got back to my computer realised I completely missed it out.

the lantern thingie is cut off too. but other than that, looks good

Yeah the more I look at it the more it annoys me the fact I missed several things out I will take this again when I have the time.

Yeah it is a polar bear!

As for the 'sharpness/softness' of the photo a few of my last photos where described as too soft would you say the same about this one or is it getting better?

I'll give it ago well seen as it's already been pointed out I'll go with the cut off items (polar bear, lantern), lack of DOF ? not really sure.

DOF is fine.. you could even cut it down a little more and it would help. Primarily what you noticed yourself..... get the whole subject, and if you do cut things off.. do it cleanly! for instance... this would be one way of cutting stuff off that still works!

Let me ask you a question... what were you trying to portray in this image?

I like the light and shallow depth of field. I think you should try to move a touch back and focus more on the santa and the polar bear as the subject. When missing part of the subject, it's hard to understand what you are trying to portray in the image. You could perhaps try different angles. Sometimes a different angle really brings a different dimension to the photo. I struggle with composition sometimes and I find trying different angles help.
