Picking up an old camera [Lumix FZ300] while being new to photography. Let me know what you think!

Hi all,

I am new here, and it's nice to see a photography forum like this. I had a Panasonic Lumix FZ300 from years ago when I was younger, but I never really got to practice photography like I wanted. Now I wanted to take up photography seriously as a hobby, and I would like to get some advice on my photos. I am trying to go "analog" (though I think the right term is just older tech), and have a dedicated camera to taking my photos rather than just using my smartphone. I would appreciate all your feedback.

I started my love with Panny cameras with the FZ30 - a superb lens unit and lots of most useful settings that I could play with. My current 'go-to' is the FZ-300 with the FZ-2500 used as well ... depending upon location and end-use needs of the images. The 300 is a great camera - and like every other camera brand in use, it contains a series of compromises into a most useful body+ lens unit.

I particularly like the the constant-aperture zoom lens- meaning that at full zoom I can shoot at F2,8 in low light + theatre work. I like that the Panny people have held the sensor to 12mpx so that image noise is minimised considerably ... but like every camera, it shows up under certain circumstances

I shoot JPG for 100% of my work and after setting the FZ to my preferred custom settings there is very little tweaking needed post-shooting.

I regularly print my results with an A4 page (8" x 12") being the smallest print size I go for .. with many 24" prints spread around my house walls

The FZ300 is a great camera to get back into photography with, especially for learning composition, exposure, and working with different lighting conditions. I wouldn't worry too much about using older equipment. The important thing is getting out and shooting regularly. Feel free to share some of your photos. Constructive feedback is one of the best ways to improve, and I hope you enjoy getting back into photography.
