I like the shot, however a lower point of view where you could pickup his eyes more would improve the shot

Nothing wrong with his hair, nothing at all. Nice hair ... but children are best photographed from a lower POV, their own eye level. It looks so domineering when you photograph from your height down to where they are. But, since you say this is an old photo, I am sure you have long been practising that in all your later photos of him or other children, haven't you? So there. All's well that ends well.
