Hey guys. I am very new to this. I am shooting with a D90 and a 200-500 tamron lens. I was looking to get twitching photos of these ducks which is what the last two are.

C&C per req:

There are two main issues I see with all three images: Exposure and composition. Notice the blown highlights on the white feathers? Your camera's meter was fooled by the preponderance of dark in the image and exposed for that. The way to get around this would be to spot-meter the white feathers; this would render the rest of the image much darker, but that's not a problem.

With respect to the issue of composition, try and frame more tightly on the main subject and avoid having the "half a duck" that you in image upper right #1, and the background of #2. Shooting any sort of wildlife takes a LOT of patience. Watch the shot, and try to develop the habit of looking around the subject for things that don't add to the image. Also try and frame your main subject so that it fills more of the frame, but isn't in the dead centre. Google the terms "Rule of thirds" and "Golden mean" for more tips on composition.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

The duck in the first one is cute..but as tirediron mentioned I did notice the half a duck in the back ground. I have found that just spending a couple days lurking around here and reading c&c and looking at photos has already made me notice more about pictures than I ever did before. I think you will find the same ;-)

I think you got about the same quality I would and I'm a newbie so no bashing here or anything. I like the ducks..lucky it looks like you could get quite close to them.

I had a 200-500mm lens. So I actually wasn't all that close, but yes these guys will let you pet them, but I don't. I don't like making any animal more acclimated to humans any more than they already are.
