This one I was so excited that I finally got all 3 of them to stand still and look at the camera without mugging I didn't even notice the shadows on their faces! Anything I can do about that now? Also had to crop the top of this one a lot because of the building on the opposite bank being too in focus and feel the kids are a bit OOF (probably camera shake). Any advice for what to do differently next time? I know they are a bit snapshotty but had to include the kids and dog in order to get any camera time in this past weekend.

This one I really like a lot as it captures her personality: 55-200 @ 55mm, f4, 1/320 (Nikon Portrait mode)

cute. In #1 I can't tell if it is the shadow on her face or if the she is OOF. Since I can't zoom in, but then again it may just be a little soft (my 55-200 Canon lens does that too)

When I zoom in she is OOF (and the shadow). Looks like I hit the dog with the sharpest focus!

In #1 A lower perspective and shooting vertical, were you on a hill above them? I downloaded the pic, faces are OOF, can't really tell where the focus went.
Good smiles and even the dog looking at the camera!

I should add that my use of OOF may be OFF here. Not sure I understand the difference between OOF and "soft"? But I'd love to know! Here is a zoomed of the kids and one of the dog.

Soft= lack of detail, un-sharp OOF is just Out Of Focus only way to fix that is re-shoot.

Somebody correct my if I'm wrong lol

Thanks for your insights, I really appreciate the constructive feedback from everyone on TPF. Yes you are right, I was on a small rise above them. I did try to take a few of these from one knee but my subjects were less cooperative for those and none had both smiling, no rabbit ears and a still dog. Next time I'll take pictures of inanimate objects! This was shot as a vertical but the opposite shore of the lake had a few eyesores that I had to crop out then the shoreline was distracting so I cropped that out too.

I like that tighter crop. It's so rare to capture a moment of them not being annoyed with each other that I want to frame this one but we'll have to keep it small so not as obviously fuzzy. Thanks!

My twin boys run from me when I pick up the camera, and one is always annoyed at the other. Consider bribing them with something they really want lol

Consider shooting in manual. Don't know what the iso was, but compromising either that or defiefinitely a bit of shutter speed for greater DOF would have yielded a better image. Fill flash would help too.

Both were at ISO 200.
