C&C pretty please

Wow, what an improvement that crop makes.

Makes me wonder what color the PJ's are. I'd love to see this crop with the monkey in color.

The pj's are red which (imo) was distracting. And not much would change with the monkey being in color...it's gray ;) The lips are red though.

I like the composition and balance and to me it would have been a wonderfully sweet photo if I could see his face too... My eyes don't have anywhere to go after looking at the sock monkey, they went to his face and it's out of focus so there's nothing there for my eyes to stop and see. I think the B&W works, and I kind of like Mickey and the monkey, I would have liked to see that and his face all in focus. I can't say I like the crop, it just feels in too tight to me.

I will politely say I don't like this shot. I get that the sock monkey is important to your son but, I think you could have got the same point across with you sons face in focus. Him hugging the monkey shows he likes it. THis is my honest opinion. When I take shots of my kids I want to remember them more than any thing the may have been attached to.

But, as a photographer you have every right to choose a style that makes you happy in from that point of view I respect what you are trying to accomplish. Photography is the end result and what makes you happy. Trying to get better is always a good thing...My advice would have been to keep your son more in focus!

Wow, what an improvement that crop makes.

Sorry to belabor this point but I think it's important to understand that the crop isn't taking off anything that distracts by its brightness or focus, it is just giving the viewer a hint that the face isn't important because it is at the margin and it's out of focus. The crop is disambiguating the picture. Without any intellectual processing, my eye now goes to the monkey and I am confident that is what is the important part.
