Well, it took me a second or so to find the 'subject' that blends too much with the surroundings so that you really have no central focus point to hold attention.
 
IMO, the OOF leaves in the foreground detract from the overall image.
 
In my opinion the subject in this instance should fill the frame, at least 33% of it ;) there's a lot of empty space that adds nothing to the image.
 
I agree with the above.... it suffers from Subject Identity Crisis. My eyes are drawn right away to the two branches, then I started looking all over for the 'subject'.

A much tighter crop, along with some pp work, is in order.

how much of a photo can you crop on a 18mp image from a 7d and it still look good?
 
Find a different squirrel with better lighting and take a better picture. Cropping isn't going to help a lot here. Harsh light on the fur, shadow on the head.
 
In spite of all its short comings mentioned (which are true) i like this image..... :D
 
I can't find the subject! You should have put a strobe to him :P
 
It needs a tighter crop. Still too many distractions. Maybe the contrast is a little high too making him not stand out as much.
