Photos NOT OK to edit
I’m really want to get into photography, and I’d appreciate it if you could help me look for good and affordable cameras, preferably below 1000 dollars. I want to do landscape and portraits. I’m already looking to buy the Canon Eos rebel T7, and I’m wondering if this camera would be fit for what I want to do.

Hello and welcome, most cameras can do what you want. Good luck with your new hobby ... :encouragement:

i would not buy an SLR in 2025.

Canon does have an R-series equivalent of the T7. Altho Ive handled it, I dont recall its full model number. Its very compact, possibly just a bit smaller than the T7, and priced well within your $1000 budget.

That camera will be fine to start out with. Get a good portrait lens (85mm or so). For landscapes you'll want something a bit wider. Get the fastest lens you can afford (something with f/1.4, f/1.8, or f/2). Once you use the Rebel for awhile, you'll discover what you like and don't like and can upgrade. Let us know what you end up doing.

I have the Canon Rebel T7 that came with two kit lenses, the 18-55 and the 75-300.

It has auto modes that do just about everything as well as manual modes that you can change all the settings.

I learned photography using film cameras so these Digital Camera's are new to me. But, I am getting used to dealing with the differences.

OP MIA since early Feb, y'all. Obvious drive-by!

Just my thinking. You want to learn don't get a DSLR, get a decent point and shoot and before jumping into it, learn to take a good picture first! I use a point and shoot with my dogs. Camera rides in a pouch on my belt and this camera rivals my DSLR for quality of photo's. But it wasn't actually inexpensive in my mind, little over $600! But for everything a camera can do, it can't compose the shot. Neither can it control the shutter release or which aperture and shutter setting it on. A camera is nothing more than a tool to help you capture a scene! The guy shooting the camera capture's the scene! I have had a number of different cameras over the years and truth be known have never learned to use everything any one of them could do. I doubt many people have ever learned to do everything with their camera it was designed to do! been doing digital about 24 yrs now and when I got my first one I also got my first computer and first printer at the same time. Taken a long time to get to where I am today but have just started selling a few and actually it was worth the wait. Still can't use everything my camera has in it! As difficult as it is the learn what a camera can do, it's more important for the shooter to learn how to get the best compositions! Only then can, maybe, all those things a DSLR can do can help you. Writer some years ago in a photography magazine also taught class's on photography. He said he started out his students with the least expensive camera they could find, lot of old box cameras. His feeling was until the shooter learned to compose a scene they would never take a good photo.

Nothing wrong buying a DSLR in 2025 lol. Still extremely capable. I have a friend who has high end mirrorless cameras, medium format cameras and yet ADORES his Nikon D700.

Now is the best time ever to buy a used DSLR as prices have dropped tremendously due to mirrorless being the trend now. You can get a Canon T6i body for $200 or less if you shop around.

I been noticing Nikon D 7000's for about $250. Have one and thinking about another.

I would advise getting a DSLR some great deals out there as mentioned. You don't need to be an expert watch some online videos on the camera you end up getting and the rest shoot, learn and practice. I don't use a fraction of my cameras capabilities but will learn more as I go along.

You can get a capable camera and set of good lenses for $1,000.
Used Nikon D80 - $50, used Nikon 24-70mm - $400, used Tokina 11-16mm(super side angle) - $150, used Nikon 18 - 200 - $175, used Nikon 35 f1.8 - $130. If you are doing landscape, you may need filters and a tripod.
