Has anyone seen this photograph (or other's like it) outside its Awkward Family Photo context? Was this a protomeme at the time? 1950's (or later) family vacations to watch nuclear bomb tests? Do you think it's been photoshopped (or whatever process one could have used to fake the photo before Photoshop existed)?

PS: I did a basic Google image search and was merely referred to its Awkward Family Photo site.

Uh............. which photo? There's gozillions of 'em.

Was this a protomeme at the time? 1950's (or later) family vacations to watch nuclear bomb tests

Lets think about the facts.

1. This was one of the most secretive projects going on at the time. Even after it was known that the US had nukes, knowing the timing and access to an area where it was going to happen was only for those involved.

2. Would the government just allow family members to have access to a potentially dangerous area for a photo OP? (Okay maybe with some politicians to day but this was a different era).

So the whole family vacation thing is crap.
Photoshop? Hell yes.
Here's a link to the real blast photo.

@zombiesniper, why'd you go and have to include logic into this?

Yes, it was photoshopped.

It is probably not a thermo-nuclear explosion. (thermo-nuclear explosions are not the only type from which a mushroom cloud will rise)

Here's a relatively SMALL explosion carried out by our military conducting an explosive ordnance demolition - "EOD". Note the cloud.
