Trying to get more into this side of photography... 1st one today. Took about 20 shots all in, here's the best two.

I love the second one...great contemplative moment captured

The girls in the background of the first one are a bit distracting for me..the business of the background takes my attention away from what the subject is bothered about.

Well, I quite quite like the first since it is open to so much interpretation.
Like I feel the girl in focus is distressed, maybe even crying, about to call someone up to vent her frustrations, and the girls in the background, snickering and all, seem to be (or could well be) the reason for the close-up girl's distress. They might have bullied her or something. Therefore I feel they belong and add to the picture. I really like all the goings-on here. Only nitpick (which is something you had no influence on, Sgt_Major, I know that!) is the hair over her eyes which meant that for a while I really did not know where she was looking. Not at all. Now I think she is looking back. In or towards the direction where the other two are. Which adds to "my story" that they laugh about her and have been mean to her before.

Well... LaFoto changed my mind a bit. I hadn't put them together in the story in my head...it's logical, but for some reason I was trying to separate the girl from the two in the background. Now looking back on the photo with that sort of interpretation...I like it much better than I had before.

The hair over her face annoyed me too IT took away a lot of her facial expression that I was trying to capture. However, I think its not a bad shot overall.

2 is definately my favourite tho.

I like #1 a lot. If you could PS a blank wall or a brick wall or something else there so it's not so busy then it would be awesome. Like LaPhoto said, the girls in background's opposite emotion really sets it off.

I don't like #2. Not sure why. Maybe a little less DOF and I might like it more.
