I am going on a camping trip soon and wanted to try some night photography and my wide lens is only a f4. Will I be wasting my time and need a faster lens?
Thanks

I have used the canon 70 200 f4 for star shots. As you are camping you will have torches, have a play with light painting

I have gotten some nice astro shots with my 24-105 f4 L on a full frame. What are you mounting this to? A full frame will normally enable you to shoot higher ISO with less noise but even with APS-C you should be able to get some decent shots. Go for it.

I will be using a Canon 6D
I also have a nifty 50 I guess if it comes down to it.

Definitely bring the 17-40.

At 17mm you'll be able to take nice long exposures.

This was shot with the 24-105 f4 on a 6D Mark II at 24mm F8, 20 seconds ISO 3200.

You can have a lot of fun with f4, a tripod, slow shutter and high ISO. The biggest issue is clear skies.

A sutter delay and dropping the mirror before taking the picture helps reduce vibrations.

I also bought a telescope adapter, but that's another adventure.

Good luck

Evertking,

The direct answer to you question is yes.

Provided you have clear skies, there is the big dipper, f5, 30 sec, 1600 ISO, 18mm.
