canon lens for beginner

Hi, i just wondering, what is better Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II or Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens? thanks[h=1][/h]

You're going to get varying opinions, but for a beginner, I think those two lenses are very similar in terms of their application.

The 50mm gives you faster performance (numerically lower f/number), which is useful in low-light, but in my opinion this isn't as much of a real-world advantage as it sounds on paper because the 50/1.8 lens has pretty crappy sharpness at wide open. This means I usually have it set at f/2.8ish anyway, where it really starts to sharpen up and become more useful.

Another thing to consider is that the 50 on a cropped sensor camera really makes you move around lot to frame your shots due to its limited field of view--which is fine, so long as it's possible; when shooting indoors (for example) you can only move around so much because you're constrained by walls, furniture, etc. The 40 will provide a slightly wider field of view and diminish this problem.

You'll be happy with either and you will learn lots from either. Personally I think the 40 is the overall better product, but it also costs roughly twice as much as the 50.

If it was me I'd get the 50mm (it was and I did!), it's very sharp and a lovley little lens to use and brilliant for portraits. The price point probably makes it the best value lens on the market too, so it's really hard to fault IMO

i have a t4i, i use both video and picture. i just got this camera for like 2 weeks, so i'm pretty much still learning right now. i tried to buy more lens, but undecided between these two.

If you plan to do the videos and want good sound out of it then go with the 40mm.
The 50 is just way to loud

The microphone on your camera will pick up the autofocus sound from the 50 mm.

The 40mm is designed with the t4i with video in mind and is virtually silent.
