canon speedlite 277t on a nikon?

Hey guys, Im wanting to brand out and learn more about lighting but Im also not looking to spend too much money at the moment. My dads old SLR had a Cannon 277t flash with it and I was wondering if it was safe to use it with my Nikon D3200. I read that it "could" be harmful but I am looking for a more exact answer. I know it works as I tested it out on my Nikon and it worked, but then I went on to read that it could cause damage so I stopped. I know I would only be able to shoot manual which is a bit of a negative for someone as new as me (TTL would be nice starting off).

If it doesnt work, what would you guys recommend me looking into on a budget?
