Ordinarily I am a fan of machinery, but here it is either too tightly-composed, or parts of it underexposed, or not enough context, and I'm not sure how to make it better. I would like you to keep trying.

I will indeed keep trying! There is plenty of machines to grab pictures of around here. You say that you're a fan, any works in particular I should check out?

I just love machinery (of all types). I can't think of any specific examples for you, but try the following:

Capture the "essence" of the machine. If it is a huge scraper, get down low, and use wide angle to emphasize the wheels, or bowl, or engine as being powerful, and huge. You don't need to get the entire machine, but get enough of it to show its "character".

Details, such as above, might benefit from just a little more context; (show where it is in relation to the bowl, for instance). Show other details, such as the operator's position, some controls, details of engines, wheels, tracks, implements, etc.

Since they're not using them daily, you might have to concentrate on details until next spring.

In my opinion, "Context" as it pertains to this piece of equipment would be that bright, unmistakeable Caterpillar yellow. It might not indicate what hydraulic linkage it was but it would certainly show that it was a Cat.

This doesn't quite make it for me. Technically it's OK - good contrast, tonal range, exposure - although it could have used a little more depth of field. However, the composition includes too much, imo. I would crop about a quarter off the right and almost a third off the bottom. This would leave you with the piston (?) assembly and the hoses above it, which seem to me to be the more interesting parts of the image.
