They are used in studio's to hold backdrops/lights, lots of uses Lighting Autopoles - Manfrotto Lighting Accessories

Is the "timber topper" sold in the UK??? it is a spring-loaded metal cap that fits over a 2x4, and presses upward, quite firmly, allowing one to position a pair of 2x4 boards upright, much like autopoles.
