"club" Photography

Hey guys I know it's beating a dead horse and all butt....

My buddy is releasing his hip-hop album in August of next year. Now I know it's a long ways away but he asked me to be the photographer at his release party and the venue is a pub/club/bar I guess. Now, my gear isn't quite capable of accomplishing this task. ( I think ) What kind of approach should I take as per lens/flash and defuser and such. Anybody have any suggestions? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Also how would I focus looking through the viewfinder? Kind of hard under lowl ight isn't it?

I would do a lot of bouncing the flash, and also a lot of motion blur with rear curtain flash freeze for the dancing photos.

So just bouncing the flash off walls will work even with my kit lens? Using my kit lens on MF then..

You wont need to use MF. There will be colorful lights on the subject for you to focus on. But using kit lens your ambient light will be very dark. You need to really jack up your ISO if you want good ambient light and drag the shutter. It really depends what you are trying to do really.

All i'm really trying to do is get a good capture with good focus and good lighting. As you can see I got an SB600, but only a D40x max ISO isn't that high.
