Here is two edits of a bird I took...

They are a bit over exposed in the highlights but i couldn't fix it very well.

Do you ever change the camera's metering mode?

The situation called for the use of spot metering, but the EXIF data shows the camera was set to Evaluative, which is why the bird was so badly underexposed while the background was properly exposed

Would that not just have blown the highlights completly out?

And actually, i have never really played around with changing the metering settings...
