What fun it is - and how effectful it can be - to do conversions from colour photos into black and white with the help of the Channel Mixer!!! The outcome can be so varied!
This is the sunflower after I had created a duplicate layer and then went to Channel Mixer and hit "Grayscale" (bottom) ... the default settings are at Red +100 / Green 0 / Blue 0. No changes done:
Then I started to play:
Red +50 / Green +50 / Blue - 50
Red 0 / Green +70 / Blue + 100
Red + 150 / Green - 200 / Blue +200 (extremes, but hey, funny outcome!)
I tried this with several more pics of mine. I would never want to return to "Desaturate" any more in order to convert my colour pics to b&w.
Oh, and by the way: this is the photo I started out with here:
