Hi Everyone,

How can this image be better?

$DSC_0050.webp

A lot could be done to improve this image, But what matters is what are you trying to do with this image?
Are you trying to make the phone appear larger than life and dramatic? Are you trying to sell this phone? Or are you just trying to get an interesting image out of something boring?
If you're just trying to post process this into a masterpiece, thats not gonna happen... The lighting is dull and boring and the composition itself isn't very interesting either. It just looks like a slightly underexposed point and shoot image of a phone on a white background..

It's underexposed, first of all.

Point of view is awkward too.

I agree, it is quite under exposed. Is the background supposed to be white or gray?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm trying to shoot a clear sharp image of the phone.

How can the lighting be improved?

I use a tent with two 150 wats lights on the side.

How can the composition be improved?

I'm trying to to get into photography by learning the basics.

Thank you very much for your help!

The tent has a white nylon background

flip it, anticlockwise

I was thinking it would make more sense to flip it, but i saw a similar image on a stock photo website, so i tried to create a similar idea. My main goal now is to learn how to shoot actual sharp images of products.

I have a Nikon D5100 with a Sigma 17-70mm Macro HSM f2.8 lens. Do i have the right equipment?

You are shooting with constant lighting? In that case, you can either add light (strobes, speedlights or other) or you will have to play with the exposure triangle: slower shutter speed, wider aperture, and/or higher iso.

I keep playing with the exposure triangle, and it seems that whatever i do it's still too dark.

What lighting would you recommend?

Suspend it from fishing line, and position it about 5-10 feet in front of a DARK background that is lighted by a cheap, Wal-Mart styrofoam cooler that is fitted with three different, overlapping pieces of colored gel material or colored plastic bags, or whatever you have. Cut a hole in the styrofoam cooler withy a steak knife, so that the flash head just fits in there. USe push pins to hold the gel material to the open end of the "mini-softbox". That will give you an in-camera, tri-color gradient fill, and will make the phone look pretty cool. Light the phone however you want to.

Be aware that this homemade softbox/color projection box will weigh in at around 1.5 ounces, so make sure you have a lightstand (or assistant) that can handle the load!!!

What mode are you shooting in?
