I looked up from my book and liked what I saw.

Hmm....maybe go full abstract and crop out everything below the vent?

That works, but it isn't what I was going for. I liked the way the thermostat and vent pulled the image back from abstract to realistic, even mundane. I thought that made the image more interesting. But that's why they make vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.

I like them both ... but, (the big but), the thermostat really draws your eye and mind away from digesting the image as a whole, one's vision goes from all-encompassing to narrow focus as the mind attempts to ID the thermostat. If your intent is to render the viewer ... uncomfortable ... via constantly shifting the viewer's attention between wide and narrow vision ... then keep the first ... if the intent is for a pure abstract a blending of shades and lines then the second version.

Two suggestions:
1) crop right above the thermostat and now you'd have a blending of the abstract and a less extreme narrow focus on the vent; and,
2) clone out the vent and thermostat now y0u have a richer abstract environment for the viewer to enjoy.
