i must admit im pretty new to all of this too and i have found i use manual a lot lately, for non moving objects. It seems that because the D40 only has 3 focus zones that manua allows more control, but it wouold be a waste of time if you were shooting anything with any movement. You would have to use the continuous focus setting. I did buy the full manualfor the D40 , which i find badly written.
