I totally agree, and I dont normally join those types of contests. This one breaks down to:
First phase (this one) - 15 people selected by popular vote. 5 people selected by judges. All 20 head to Boston (and their own expense) to assist on a 1 day shoot and learn seminar. A few other perks are given, such as a free printed portfolio
Second phase - from the 20 in Boston, portfolios are reviewed by judges and the top person is selected to go to Hawaii, plane and hotel paid, to assist on a commercial shoot for Hawaii Joe.
So the popular vote gets you 1 in 15 chances to get in, then there is the judge vote. Its not all popularity. The other one I am in is a Think Tank contest to win $5000 of stuff. First three prizes are by judges. Fourth prize is fan vote.
So seems they are balancing things out somewhat.
You can vote once per 24h. I have found ways around that and can vote as many times as I want, but won't do that until I really need to as they might be tracking IPs and such.
To see who is winning, from the vote page I linked, in the middle, click on View All Entries. You then get 2 columns, one that shows entries by votes, the other shows entries by last uploaded. Click on the See All Entries by Most vote. Or, just scroll down on this page as mine is in 3rd and this page shows you top 5

Update!
With your help, I managed to get into 3rd place! Thats enough to get me to the next stage, a workshop in Boston. And then I have a chance to get the grand prize of heading to Hawaii to assist on a commercial photo shoot for Maui Jim.
I seriously appreciate all the help and support you guys gave. Thanks!!
