So which crop do YOU like best & why? I realize the original might break some rules, but I think it works with this image. Feel free to critique too & let me know anything that you might have done different.

Original crop...

New Crop..

Thanks

assuming you need a 4x6 crop i would go with the second. If you are not limited to 4x6 then maybe add a little to the back of it.

I'd say the second. In general having your subject moving into the frame rather than out looks better.

edit: although looking more at the first I do like that it has more dirt.

The 2nd looks better in my untrained eyes because of leading space. :)

I agere with Mr. Shirtpants here, on both grounds. Perhaps a little tight crop in the second one => no dirt.

But nice panning, sharp and clear photos!

The second one because you are give the motorbike somewhere to go

Thanks for the input. I think if it wasn't for the motion blur of the wheels, background & the roost the first one would look wrong. To me it just screams "Wide F#^@'n Open"... I have a few others in the set cropped like the second, so I was trying to get a little variety where i could so they don't all look the same. When you're stuck in the same spot on the track there's only so much you can do.

How do you keep all the shots from looking the same when you're at a race? I mean, I really guess it depends on the purpose of the shoot. If they where just individual rider photos then I guess it wouldn't matter. What would you do if you were stuck on one corner and had to variety of shots?

The only way is to move around, but if you don't have track access it is going to be hard, i get to move where i want if i shoot MX

I hope you weren't too close in that last one gsgary. I'd be mortified if my camera/lens got smacked with a huge glob of mud.

I don't shoot this kind of thing so feel free to ignore me! If you're really stuck in one spot I guess I'd just say try different focal lengths, different shutter speeds to freeze the dirt flying around, things like that.

Not a problem when shooting with a 300F2.8L :sexywink:

Faces work better than the backs of heads.

The holy grail of sports photography is faces and emotions. Obviously the helmet and goggles used with MX pretty much precludes emotion, making the front/face shot even more critical.
