Custom White Balance

i tried to set a custom white balance with my D40, but it keeps telling me it cant get the shot or something.

what am i doing wrong?

first step in custume WB is exposure. reason is - as light falls of by inverse square law (1/x^2) a gorgeous white wall for example will be gray once you move further from it. therefore you have to expose correctly.
Ideally, its better, rather more accurate, to use an 18% gray card. Personally, it is the best $5 I ever contributed to photography.

CPM Delta 1 9122030 Gray Cards 8 in. X 10 in. - Focus Camera

I got mine from focus only b/c it is 10min drive from my house while B&H is about an hour + parking.
