Hi all,

D type lenses have an aperture ring (I think) while g type have not. Does this mean aperture is selected manually on the d type and you therefore cannot use shutter priority? This is probably a very stupid question to some. I have ordered a nikon body and checking out lenses. I am familiar with lenses in general but nikon is new to me. Thanks

When on a DSLR, you set the aperture ring of a D lens to minimum and use the camera's controls to adjust it.

All exposure modes work the same as a G lens.

You said you ordered a Nikon body, so I'm gonna assume its a modern one.

The D lenses have an aperture ring, but the camera will automatically set the aperture if your in Shutter Priority.

Thanks to you both.

You'll see on the aperture ring there is a little selector switch. You set the aperture to 22 (for example - or other maximum f number) and the switch allows you to LOCK the aperture so it does not rotate. This also allows control to the camera for changing the aperture electronically. For example using the front dial on a D7000 to roll through the aperture settings.

when you have the lens off the camera. unlock the switch and look through the lens and change the aperture as you look through the lens. Then you can see what it does.

If you look a little more closely around the edge of the glass You'll notice a little "lever" near the glass that also does the same thing. This is the lever that the camera uses to open/close the aperture.

As everyone said here for all intense and purposes Nikon D lenses work on your camera just as a G lens would, all you need to do is lock your aperture ring and its fully automatic.
Just to be sure you are aware that for D lenses to auto focus on your camera you need one of the higher body of the Nikon cameras ?
If will AF on the D90, 7D3, D7100, D700.....etc but it will not AF on the D3100, D3200, D5200

I have 2 D lenses and I absolutely LOVE them, awesome lenses!!! for very reasonable prices.

Thanks. I was aware of focus motors etc so had that in mind. I know a few who use nikon but they are all g type lenses and didn't really "get it" from googling d type lenses. I know now so can look at lower cost alternatives for a few primes and not worry about functionality. It is a d7100 I ordered so body motor included.
