D3000 vs D5000?

Yeah...... the D7000 and a tight budget aren't going to play well together. If the OP can afford it, I would say go for it. I've had mine for just a few days and am simply amazed by it. The problem is that its more than double the cost of the models that are currently being discussed.

You will, however, be able to find a used D90 body for the same price as a new D5000 if you look hard enough. You might even be able to find a used D5000 for the price of a new D3000 kit if you're really lucky...... and just after Christmas is going to be the time to look.

The D5000 has a CMOS sensor. I would even look at a D80 in that price range.
D80? I wouldn't. D80 has the same old sony 10mp CCD used in D40x, D60 and D3000. It really has problems with noise at high ISO, which is the reason I purchased a Rebel XS a few weeks ago. Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible sensor, but if you can get the D5000, go for it.

Love the D5000, its my first DSLR. Got all my two lens, filters, carrying case, cleaning kit, extra battery and quick charger for around 850$ last year all brand new. If you want to see some photos check out my flicker :D
