So with the D300s is there any type of setting to go into aperture priority or anything similar or is it all manual settings

Yes, there is a dial to let you choose Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual modes.

There is not a full Auto Program, so P would be the closest.

on any nikon above the D200 you have 4 modes. M, A, S, and P!
