Give them a chance their first post was only yesterday.
There a forums I won't now visit more than once a week - but with the likes of the extremely harsh comment from @wfooshee I wouldn't expect a newbie to come back.

I know I've taken much worse photos.

Yeah but would you have posted them here? Harsh or truthful? Who decides that? Zero comments are likely the kindest form of dismissal, granted, but if wfooshee really loathed it, why not just let that pass unremarked, too?

It was that kind of attitude that caused me to leave the forum after being very active, for about 4 or 5 years. Every newbie asking for help was beaten to a pulp by one or more of about 10 members that could never save anything nice nor could they figure out how to scroll on by. I suppose that's why active members now are about 1/10 of what there use to be.

Then there are thin-skinned narcissists who take any criticism as an insult--thankfully limited to a few posters nowadays. Online petting zoos are scarce. Suspect there's way more than abrasive comments behind the decline in site traffic.

I hope you weren't referring to me. I'm not talking about constructive criticism. I'm referring to those who have to be an @ss simply because they can. That's neither constructive nor helpful.

Not at all. Nothing smart or clever about gratuitous nastiness. It's the endless whining and baseless offense triggered by any criticism that's tiresome. Childish entitlement tantrums result.
Some care should be taken to make clear separate objective and subjective criticism whenever
possible.

The first paragraph was definitely Harsh, and probably harsh enough the rest of the thread has been ignored.
No I generally wouldn't post my worst shots here, but I'm not a beginner, I can usually see that I've overexposed by several stops, or missed focus or just had a composition that didn't work.

When someone asks for critique the proper thing to do is to find things wrong that could be improved & list them (or some of them) in a courteous way and of course to give suitable praise if you really like the shot.

If you really loathe a shot you can say that too, but it should be clear that it's not to your taste rather than slamming it as totally worthless.

The remainder of Wfooshee's post was IMO hard but helpful, though seems to take no account that the image was from someone who is a total beginner.

There are indeed. If someone asks for critique & is insulted by a post like #14, then I wouldn't think it would be any loss to the forum, if they never came back.

I've been here for years & while I wouldn't like receiving a slamming I'd certainly be able to cope with it, having received a fair degree of positive feedback in the past.
